Seattle Seahawks drop the ball, pass on Tim Tebow

Passing on the chance to make Tim Tebow their backup quarterback is a major mistake, says WCSN columnist Brock Alton.

Passing on the chance to make Tim Tebow their backup quarterback is a major mistake, says WCSN columnist Brock Alton.

Ever since the Seattle Seahawks traded backup quarterback Matt Flynn to the Oakland Raiders, rumors had been flying that they were interested in picking up Tim Tebow.

Now it’s being reported that Seattle has stricken Tebow’s name from their list.

They are making a big mistake.

Bringing in Tebow would be the perfect move for a franchise that is short on quarterbacks. The ever-effervescent Tebow has been trapped on the New York Jets bench since his surprising, if understandable, ouster from Denver following a 2011 campaign that included a Wild Card win over the reigning AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

Insurance policy

The Seahawks play in the physical and athletic NFC West, where they face the punishing San Francisco 49ers defensive line twice a year. Injuries happen, especially when a team runs a read-option style of offense, as Seattle does. Quarterback Russell Wilson has proven he belongs as a starter in the NFL, and he has given Seattle every reason to place their full confidence in him.

However, it’s impossible to ignore the reality that no small part of Wilson’s success revolved around his speed and footwork. Though Wilson may run less often than Colin Kaepernick, his counterpart in San Fransisco, he often uses his athleticism to buy time in the pocket before letting go of a pass. In a league bristling with pass rushers eager to make their mark on a young, upstart quarterback, this is just asking for trouble.

Inspiration

Were the worst to happen, Tebow could bridge the gap like no other quarterback on the market. He has experience running an option offense, both on the collegiate level and with the Broncos. Although he lacks Wilson’s passing accuracy, he could nevertheless manage a passable Wilson impression in relief. Even better, he would galvanize the team with his trademark infectious enthusiasm and winning ways.

No one embodies an attitude of “never say die” like Tim Tebow.

Seeing Tebow suit up in silver and blue would be a win for everyone involved. Seattle needs to make that happen now.

@Atlfalconsfan0125 Yep.  You should.  Otherwise Joe will do it, then if you don't agree he'll do another one with 10,000 more words, then if you don't agree he'll up it to 15,000.
