Louis L’Amour taught our society to cherish the story of the little guy who makes it big. By the looks of it, we’re seeing one happen before our very eyes. According to reports, the Detroit Lions have signed kicking prospect Havard Rugland, better known by the self-applied moniker “Kickalicious.”

For the past few weeks, we have been following the amusing story of the Norwegian internet celebrity, who despite never having played a down of American football, earned himself instant fame when his Youtube video entitled “Kickalicious™” went viral and caught the attention of NFL scouts. The video portrays Rugland performing some pretty impressive feats of kicking prowess, although there’s no word on just how many takes it took to nail those crazy stunts.

David Akers can tie the NFL record for longest field goal on one play and then miss an easy kick the next.

Since the video came out, Rugland has relocated to the United States and begun making the rounds. He tried out with the New York Jets last year, then attended Michael Husted’s pro kicking camp.

About a month ago, he received an invitation for a private workout with the Detroit Lions. Detroit was reportedly intrigued with Rugland’s leg strength but were unable to offer him a contract at the time because their personnel situation was still up in the air.

Once longtime kicker Jason Hanson announced his retirement after 21 seasons in Detroit, the Lions moved swiftly to fill the void left by his departure. They brought in David Akers, lately of the San Francisco 49ers, to be their presumed Week 1 starter.

But they didn’t stop there. Yesterday, they also signed Rugland — excuse me, Kickalicious — to the roster. Neither Rugland’s agent nor Lions spokesman Matt Barnhart were willing to disclose terms of the deal, so it’s not clear how much Detroit actually has invested in this intriguing prospect.

Nevertheless, whether he makes the 53-man roster or not, competition between Rugland and Akers should liven up camp quite a bit and is sure to be a focal point of media scrutiny. At the very least, it will keep the technically brilliant but notoriously unreliable kicker on his toes and force him to tighten up his game a bit. Imagine how embarrassing it would it be for a 17-year veteran of the pros to lose his job to a Norwegian who has never played a down of football on any level.

Who knows? Maybe the signing of Rugland will turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to Akers. Judging by the video, Kickalicious could teach Akers a move or two.

@jwoude23 Bear Down Crenshaw is a smart guy too and went to bat for that kid knowing it was fucked up. It is hard not to respect Crenshaw's opinion on this.

@Buhlitz I have never once emulated that guy. Not his catch phrases nor any other element of his being.
