Chicago Bears select Kyle Long, OL, Oregon, 20th overall
- Updated: April 25, 2013
With the 20th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears selected offensive lineman Kyle Long from the University of Oregon Let’s take a moment to get to know the newest Bear and see how he fits on the roster.
Kyle Long took an unconventional route to the first-round pick, launching his career as a baseball player at Florida State. He eventually wound up at junior college for football, where he started at defensive end before switching to offensive line. Long was a tackle at Oregon but projects as a guard or center in the NFL. He has only played one year of offensive line, meaning that he is a bit of a project.
How he fits in
Arguably the biggest hole in Chicago’s 2013 roster was the interior offensive line, and Kyle Long should help here. He could push for a starting position at right tackle or offensive guard and could even be the eventual successor to Roberto Garza at center. Long will most likely compete with Gabe Carimi, James Brown, Matt Slauson, and Edwin Williams for a starting guard spot this year.
Long definitely fills a need for Chicago, but he was a major reach at No. 20. General manager Phil Emery had a plethora of options with this pick, including better offensive linemen like Larry Warford, defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd, a projected top-five pick who fell, linebacker Alec Ogletree, or trading back if they could find a partner. Long was a second-round talent they grabbed over significantly better players.
Long is still raw, so maybe he develops into a star and proves the experts wrong. But this pick looks like a complete misfire for a team that needs maximum impact out of their limited draft ammunition.
well= I do feel pretty happy about the vikings moves. full faith in spielman- but it is kinda bitter sweet because tomorrow is done
So the only QB in the first round will be Buffalo dude. I think the Pack should be considering that position, on the reals, but not in round 2. I hope Ted doesn't pull the trigger if one of the bigger names falls to GB.
I find it odd that in such an unpredictable draft, the Packers ended up drafting the guy everyone thought they would draft.
There were some really questionable moves in the first round, Oak, Jets, Buffalo, Chic, NOR, and now Dallas.
@Buster Hymen did you see my submit rourke, was it ok?
@Buster Hymen thanks rourke- awesome editing and thanks for including bio details
@Buster Hymen Suddenly I have no lifefyre comment space on that page.
@natradamus A. I liked it and know they have extra picks
@TheChainsawNinja i'm still hoping for a true big though, Jones is about the same size as Neal, but we NEED size up front with Picket being a FA next year along with Raji who i expect to be re-signed
@TheChainsawNinja Wish they would have jumped in front of the Vikes and got Floyd
@Sweet melt you bitch I did too.
@TheChainsawNinja Justin Hunter to Detroit. Make it happen Mayhew
@___bp___ what did the girl on the other end sound like...Te'o should never use the phone again in his life.
With the Kyle Long pick as an example, I see them going punter
@jwoude23 Bear Down Or kicker. Or 6th round ILB.
@Aciddragon Honestly, it doesn't look like Green Bay was looking for a center in this draft. They're very confident in EDS it seems. Anyways, there's still Barrett Jones and Brian Schwenke.
@jwoude23 Bear Down Minter I bet
@jwoude23 Bear Down wow big reach
@Buster Hymen Got it now by clicking trhough from twitter. I'd try that folks.
@TheChainsawNinja i like Schwenke, but with Fredrick gone teams are now more likely to reach for a center if they need one
Scouts Inc had Long going at 47 to Dallas
@jwoude23 Bear Down CBSSports has Fredrick ranked at 53 and Long at 56
