Detroit Lions select Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU, 5th overall

The Detroit Lions hope that defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, whom they took fifth overall, will be getting in the faces of NFL quarterbacks for years to come.

With the fifth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected defensive end Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah out of Brigham Young.  Let’s take a moment to get to know the newest Lion and see how he fits on the roster.

Bio

A native of Accra, Ghana, Ansah tried out for the BYU basketball team in 2008 and 2009. After failing both times, he joined the track team but left at the end of the 2009 season. Despite warnings from head football coach Bronco Mendenhall and other members of his staff, Ansah joined the football program for the 2010 season. A freak athelete and quick learner, Ansah earned the starting job his senior season, playing as a hybrid defensive tackle and defensive end.

How he fits in

In the wake of the departures of ends Kyle Vanden Bosch and Cliff Avril, general manager Martin Mayhew takes a flyer on a boom-or bust prospect. Ansah is still raw as an end but has the potential, size, and speed to be a great defensive linemen with the right coaching. He could be Detroit’s starting defensive end Week 1 if he learns quickly; at worst, he will become a dangerous situational pass rusher. If he doesn’t take the next step from freak athlete to dependable starter, he could prove to be a major bust at No. 5 overall.

Grade: B+

This was the right meeting of need and value for the Lions. Ansah has tremendous potential but Detroit fans must remain both wary and patient. He could take time to develop.

@LionskillPack @JVince11 with his frame he is going to struggle against the run, but he should be at the very least a capable pass rusher
