Carolina Panthers look to clip wings of Philadelphia Eagles
- Updated: August 15, 2013
The Carolina Panthers (1-0) play on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles (0-1) at Lincoln Financial Field for a Week 2 preseason tilt. The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
Neither team had reported its gameday inactive list as of press time, but it’s expected that most starters will play for both squads.
What to watch
Quarterback Cam Newton was unimpressive in his first outing, completing three of six passes for 16 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. No pass went further than 14 yards. In his defense, much of that was due to field position and play calling. As he puts nearly a full half of play in tonight, we should see more diversity in plays called and receivers targeted.
They had a great first game, but Philly brings different challenges. They feature a more dynamic run game between running backs LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown and quarterback Michael Vick and should represent a better test than Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte (-1 yards) posed.
Last week the Panthers collected seven sacks. Can head coach Chip Kelly’s new accelerated offensive scheme put a damper on the pass rush? Carolina has high hopes for many of the backups, including linebackers A.J. Klein and Chase Blackburn, defensive tackles Kawann Shorts and Colin Cole, and defensive end Frank Alexander. Will the faster pace enable the studs to stay more rested and reverse the late-game collapses they have suffered the last two years?
Kawann Shorts and Josh Norman
Kawann Shorts and cornerback Josh Norman are young and talented, and both had very strong showings in the first preseason game. They are making a push to replace Dwan Edwards and Captain Munnerlyn for the starting jobs.
The offensive line is the most troubling facet of the 2013 Panthers squad. The starters are shaky and the backups are injured. Although almost everyone expects the team to bring in new players to shore things up, no moves have been made yet. Guard Amini Silotolu and tackles Garry Williams and Byron Bell have to play at their best just to be acceptable.
Since recent addition Dominik Hixon has yet to do anything but nurse his wounds, Armanti Edwards, David Gettis, and Ted Ginn, Jr. are in a battle for the No. 3 to No. 5 wide receiver spots. Edwards and Ginn have had very good camps, while Edwards and Gettis had nice showing against Chicago. Ginn gets a bit of a pass due to quarterback Derek Anderson’s inability to get the ball within three miles of any receiver last Thursday. Hopefully each receiver will get quality looks from Newton to more accurately show what he can bring to the team.
The Eagles are still struggling to learn the Chip Kelly system. The defense looks lost. Kelly is bringing the quarterback competition to a slow boil by starting Nick Foles tonight.
The Panthers aren’t world beaters, but they at least know what they are and what they want to do — and they have most the pieces to do it.
Final score: Panthers 31, Eagles 17
Bowe, Nelson, or Colston....
I actually took Colston... Nelson's production is off set with Cobb and Jones.. Bowe is hurt... I think Colston was the best bet.
Prep's future boy:
What is this whole "random" draft thing now... I drafted 4th but now not again until 24? every round you draft in a different slot...
does this really make it even?

@JonBeason52/Bullethead527 See you
I like your gun.
@JVince 11 Ridley
The second one, maybe, I don't know, you decide.
@JVince 11 No, that actually sounds horrible.
Unless you have an infinite number of rounds, a random draft is, by its very nature, not even.
@MIBearFan I'll see you tomorrow
@BearsSaveLives You are on time
@BearsSaveLives He was around, seemed a little angry, and made not a single excuse.
Ugh! Just another terrible stereotype.
@JonBeason52/Bullethead527 Butter, son?
It adds up to one thing.
@Maized and Confused Nice pick up line
@Preparation_A considering they're a deadly weapon... yes
but like most things you can still buy them...
@Preparation_A uhhhh you can find them online at martial art places etc.. I am not sure where... but I know they can be found.
@Preparation_A Or Brass Knuckles... those would be equivalent to if I had a giant steel pipe wrapped around my knuckles
@Maized and Confused cool... I think QBs get the most points and they don't get taken out of a gameplan if the team gets down by a ton of points like a RB does.
@Preparation_A If you need another "POLE" just let me know...
@Rajifarian HOME ALONE IS A TIMLESS CLASSIC TRANSCENDING SEASONS!!! FUCK YOU
@Preparation_A its legit
