Carolina Panthers hopefuls showcase talents against Baltimore Ravens

It’s time for the Carolina Panthers to open up the playbook as they visit the Baltimore Ravens tonight.

The Baltimore Ravens (2-0) host the Carolina Panthers (1-1) at M & T Bank Stadium tonight. Kickoff is at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Baltimore’s starting offense has only scored once — on a 77-yard touchdown catch and run by wide receiver Torrey Smith — while the starting defense has allowed 33 combined points to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons. On the other hand, they have managed to dominate their opponents’ second and third strings to remain perfect.

Carolina has not fared much better offensively, scoring just three times despite having several prime opportunities to reach the end zone. In their first game against the Chicago Bears, the defense set the offense up on the 18-yard line. Last weak against the Philadelphia Eagles, they moved into scoring range but had to settle for two second-quarter field goals.

What to watch

No. 3 wide receivers

David Gettis has put up gaudy numbers in his two preseason games but has accomplished little in camp. Ted Ginn, Jr.  has done better in camp but has a less intriguing stat line in games action. Gettis has received the most fanfare so far, although he has yet to catch a single ball from quarterback Cam Newton or make a reception against a first-string defensive squad.

Both should see quality playing time with the first team in the first three quarters, facing off against solid cornerbacks. What each player shows in the first half should go a long way to deciding who is the No. 3 wide receiver to start the season.

Backup cornerbacks

Both Josh Norman, a second-year player, and Josh Thomas, now in his third season, have shown promise so far. Norman has come up with with three interceptions and a pick-six. They are playing to unseat starting cornerbacks Captain Mutterlyn and Drayton Florence. A good showing tonight and mission accomplished!

Cam Newton

In no danger of losing his starting job, quarterback Cam Newton has played uninspired so far this offseason. The offense and head coach Ron Rivera cannot afford another slow start to the season. Fortunately, reports out of camp indicate that Newton has grown into a better leader and is more poised. He had better be, because the Ravens defense can expose any minute flaw.

Mike Shula

Assuming the offensive coordinator role when Rod Chudzinski left to coach the Cleveland Browns, Mike Shula has shown little to erase his “too conservative” label. He has not showcased Newton’s big arm by throwing downfield targets. Is he trying to hone Newton weaker short game or is he just that uncreative?

Meaningless prediction

The defenses dominate this game while the first teams play. Carolina goes to the locker room at halftime with a 10-6 lead off a 50+ yard touchdown reception by Ted Ginn, Jr. Baltimore again smothers the backups and takes the win.

Final score: Ravens 23, Carolina 16

@Rajifarian Then that'd be weird since Batman and Catwoman get freaky together.

Funniest thing on Aflleck/Batman I've seen yet

"Robin, I lost my khakis."

"Your what?"

"My khakis to the batmobile."
