Still perfect, Chicago Bears stymie Pittsburgh Steelers, 40-23

Lance Briggs (55) and the Chicago Bears defense forced five turnovers and scored two touchdowns in a 40-23 victory over Ben Roethlisberger (7) and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Lance Briggs (55) and the Chicago Bears defense forced five turnovers and scored two touchdowns in a 40-23 victory over Ben Roethlisberger (7) and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Recap

For the third week in a row, the Chicago Bears (3-0) faced a tough game situation in the fourth quarter.  For the third week in a row, the Chicago Bears offense made some big plays down the stretch to pull out a victory.

After jumping out to an early 24-3 lead, the Bears struggled for much of the second and third quarters and let Pittsburgh get it back to 27-23.  Then Chicago drove down the field to score a touchdown on a difficult drive keyed by three huge third down plays.  Jay Cutler ran for 13 yards on third and ten, Brandon Marshall had a 41-yard reception on third and 12, and Earl Bennett had a beautiful touchdown catch on third and five.

That put the Chicago Bears up by 11 points, and they iced the game four plays later when linebacker Lance Briggs forced a fumble that defensive lineman Julius Peppers recovered and returned for a touchdown.  An interception by safety Chris Conte on Pittsburgh’s last-gasp drive sealed a 40-23 victory for the Bears (3-0).

Studs

Running back Matt Forte had a big game, rushing 16 times for 87 yards and a touchdown and catching all four of his passes for 24 yards.  All three Chicago Bears linebackers had big games.  Lance Briggs had a sack and forced fumble, D.J. Williams had two sacks and a forced fumble, and James Anderson recovered a fumble.  Safety Major Wright had seven tackles and an interception, which he returned for a touchdown.

Duds

The offensive line struggled some tonight, giving up two sacks and having a difficult time picking up many of Pittsburgh’s exotic blitzes to give quarterback Jay Cutler enough time in the pocket.  The secondary struggled as well, giving up over 400 passing yards to Ben Roethlisberger and particularly getting torched by wide receiver Antonio Brown, who had  nine catches on thirteen targets for 196 yards and two touchdowns.  Return man Devin Hester had a quiet night, returning two kickoffs for only 26 yards.

Injuries

Running back Matt Forte left the game briefly in the first half, had his ankle taped, and came back in a few plays later.  Cornerback Charles Tillman left the game in the second half with a groin injury; the Chicago Bears said he could have come back in if needed.  The news was not so good for defensive tackle Henry Melton, who was carted off with a knee injury that could potentially be very serious.

What’s next

Another week, another somewhat ugly victory for the Chicago Bears.  The offense continues to be up and down as they grow into their new system, but they continue to make big plays when they need to.

The Chicago Bears head to Detroit for a difficult divisional road game next week.  It will be an extremely challenging contest, but it is also a huge chance for the Chicago Bears to make a statement, as a win would make them 2-0 in the NFC North and give them a two game cushion over everyone else in the division.

I think it was evident that the Packers offensive game plan was Finley.

pickle wrap dip is so damn awesome. Had some for the game yesterday.

You take ham, dill pickle relish, and cream cheese and mix it up.

Awesomeness on a cracker.

Hey gents something about this Livefyre thing.....we all know it's frustrating, and I've discussed it with Rourke and he has been on the line with Livefyre countless times trying to see what they can do to improve it's function.  Unfortunately this version is as good as it's going to get, and our attempt to upgrade to the next service will cost something in the neighborhood of $1000/mo which is obviously not going to happen (unless JVince sells off all his helmets and gives Rourke the money).

Frank Gore only had 4 touches in the second half of yesterdays game.  Looks like Harbaugh had a MM moment.

Green Bay just needs more patience with Ross. Keep him out there and let him make his mistakes, we'll all laugh about it later.

I don't think the Packers have ever needed a game against Cutler more than they do right now.

I must have done something wrong. My correlation matrix consists of nothing but 0.9030383 repeated 26 times across and 140 times down. Hm.

@CONCHS333 19/41 236 yards 0 TDs and 1 INT is a bad game. Glennon will be starting coming out of the bye.

@falconsriseup19 How So??? Did the Falcons lose??? yes, I'd say it was more because of all their injuries than anything else.
