Black Blue and Ornery: coaching moves abound
- Updated: January 20, 2014
Good morning, folks! Welcome to the Water Cooler Sports Black, Blue, and Ornery, your source for NFC North News on this Monday, January 20th, 2014.
Quote of the day:
”Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!”
And on this day in history:
- 1783: a peace treaty officially ended the American Revolutionary War.
- 1934: The first talking motion picture film that was filmed outside-In Old Arizona-is released to the public.
- 1986: Martin Luther King, Jr. day was celebrated for the first time. Today also marks MLK day in 2014, when we remember the tremendous impact he had on promoting racial equality in America.
We also have some great birthdays to celebrate today:
- Matthew Tuck (34)-Lead vocalist and guitarist in the band Bullet for my Valentine.
- Edwin McCain (44)-Musician most famous for the 1998 hit “I’ll Be,” which I’m sure all of you have danced with that special someone to at least once.

Every team in the NFC North had a notable coaching move made this weekend. For the Bears, it was the hiring of new linebacker coach Paul Pasqualoni. Pasqualoni had a long career spanning college and the NFL; he was most recently the head coach for the University of Connecticut.
Congratulations are in order for second year wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, who was named the most improved player in the NFL by the Pro Football Writers of America. Jeffery saw his production improve by more than 1,000 yards from last year to this year, so this is a well-deserved honor.
Backup quarterback Josh McCown has no intentions to retire, according to a source. Now it remains to be seen if the free agent will be back in Chicago or head elsewhere for more money and a chance at a starting role.
The Detroit Lions have begun filling out their coaching staff around new head honcho Jim Caldwell, hiring Teryl Austin as the defensive coordinator, Bill Sheridan as the linebackers coach, and Ron Prince as the tight ends coach.
Speaking of Caldwell, Lions fans can learn more about him in this great profile.
Finally we have a bit of good news for an ex-Lion; former first round pick Jahvid Best will return to the University of California to get his degree and join the coaching staff. This is a great situation for Best, whose NFL career lasted less than two years due to concussions.
Green Bay Packers
Green Bay linebacker coach Kevin Greene has decided to step away from coaching to spend more time with his family. I know this isn’t the defensive coaching overhaul Packers fans wanted, but it’s something, right?
One of the few question marks for Green Bay’s offense next year involves the center position, where incumbent Evan Dietrich-Smith is a free agent. Coincidentally, you can check out WCS’ own Adam Kuhl for his opinion on what the Packers should do with Dietrich-Smith, as well as the rest of their offense.
The Vikings wasted little time getting an offensive coordinator, announcing the hiring of Norv Turner just one day after getting Mike Zimmer as their new head coach.
Stadium update! The Metrodome roof was collapsed (intentionally this time) in a little over thirty minutes, marking the end of an era for the Vikings’ former stadium. This took about 29.5 minutes longer than the last time the roof collapsed, although this one will be a little more permanent.
