2014 Vikings Training Camp Round 2
- Updated: August 7, 2014
With another week of training camp done and with the first preseason game being held tomorrow. Let’s take a look at where the Vikings are, and things to keep an eye on, in their first preseason game against the Raiders.
TE Chase Ford is still out of practice recovering from his recent foot surgery. He was seen without his walking boot and doing lite jogging, but now he is back in the walking boot. His time frame of return is still up in the air. Chase Ford’s chances to make the team just went from little to great since the recent release of undrafted rookie TE A.C. Le0nard. A.C. was looking good in camp and looked to be a late flyer who could make a place for himself on the 53 man roster, but with him missing a week with a mysterious headache (concussion never confirmed) A.C. was released by the Vikings on Wednesday. This gives Ford a good chance to maintain his roster spot.
The injuries are starting to add up in the secondary. S Robert Blanton is still missing time with his hamstring injury. CB Josh Robinson and CB Marcus Sherels have both missed some time, but it appears they have missed mainly due to precaution. Andrew Sendejo finally returned to practice but due to him and Blanton missing time, the Vikings have brought in veteran S Chris Crocker who has been in Zimmer’s system for most of Crocker’s career. Look for him to be a plan B if no other Safety makes a good case to start.
Bridgewater has finally got his chances with the first team. It hasn’t been a 50/50 split between him and Cassel for first team reps, but Bridgewater is getting his chances. Both QB’s have had their good and bad days. This is to be expected with a new system and Turner also said they are throwing as much as they can at the two QB’s to see how much they can handle. Depending on who you follow some are saying Bridgewater is making a good case to be the week 1 starter. I really think this first preseason game will be huge for the QB competition. Zimmer has said he wants Teddy to get reps with the first team in tomorrows preseason game. That is one thing to keep your eye on in tomorrows game, is to see if a QB separates themselves from the other.
Cordarrelle Patterson WR has returned to practice and is a welcomed addition. David Yankey LG got his chance with first team reps on Wednesday, but I believe this is mainly because it appeared they were resting the starters prior to the first preseason game. Zimmer has mentioned however that Yankey is improving everyday, but i think he has a bigger hill to climb to take the starting LG job from Charlie Johnson than we originally thought. Rookie RB Jerick McKinnon is fast, like watch out fast. (just wanted to keep throwing him in here).
As mentioned above, the Vikings have brought in veteran S Chris Crocker. He is now the oldest Viking on the roster at 34, but in my opinion Zimmer brought him in to coach up his young secondary on his scheme and to be a plan B in case Blanton, Sendejo, Raymond or Sanford fail to take the starting spot next to Harrison Smith. The rotating of LB’s is still a common occurrence with the first team reps. The base D LB”s still seem to be Greenway, Brinkley, and Barr, but every LB is still getting reps with the first team. Hodges, Cole, and Mauti are still being moved around in different spots. Zimmer has said this is what he wants from his backup LB’s to be able to play any LB position. With the return of CB Captain Munnerlyn, the secondary is starting to take shape other than the SS spot. Munnerlyn and Sherels have been getting most of the first team reps for outside CB next to Rhodes, while rookie CB Price and Munnerlyn have taken the majority of the reps in the nickle corner position.
It seems the main word used by the players and coaches when asked whats different from this staff to last years is the word accountability. We got to see an example of this in Tuesdays practice when DE Everson Griffen was called for off-sides on the first play of 11 on 11 drills. Because of this, Zimmer made the entire team (and i mean the entire 90 man roster) drop and give him push-ups. This was received with an ovation from the crowed in attendance. When asked why he did this Zimmer responded “It happened a couple other times, and i was tired of it” I think this is a welcomed change and look forward to seeing if it makes any differences on game days.
Preseason Game 1
Five things to watch in preseason game 1 are:
1. QB Competition
2. LB Rotation
3. SS Competition
4. Offensive Line Rotation
5. RB #2 Competition

@Preparation_FuckYouHorse My feels.....They broke.
@Preparation_FuckYouHorse He was talking to Lions fans specifically.
@Preparation_FuckYouHorse No problem bro
Qbs will get off to a fast start because of the penalties but DBs will adjust by playoff time and offenses will be fucked
@Lack_of_Preperation The only adjustment will be DB's going from getting burned all the time, to not getting burned as much, is what I'm thinking.
CNN Headline: Autopsy done on driver hit by Stewart
Spoiler Alert: Death via being by struck large vehicle moving at a high rate of speed
@Reginald Hopelessness I heard he got up and screwed "Tis but a flesh wound"
@Reginald Hopelessness Woooh!
@Reginald Hopelessness Nah, offense won't move the chains enough
Bold Prediction: Passing yards record will fall again this year or we will have multiple 5200+ yard QBs like in 2011 due to these holding penalties being enforced.
@Reginald Hopelessness with all the holding illegal contact shit.. its possible
@Reginald Hopelessness RODGERS! Lacy' be beasting so hard the first 2 weeks, teams gonna be pullin Safetys up!
The second one. DBs will be learning to adjust for most of the season before they can do it consistently.
There is an article in the queue by Mr. Childerz.

A dude at the Packer game....how could the stadium let this happen! If the place was packed that would fuck up like 6 peoples night!
@Maized and Confused Obviously staged, just look around him. But still....
No way that photo was taken the instant that started happening, so that guy had to have been sitting there like that for quite a few seconds before the guy with the camera took that picture.
@Koosh12684 There were 6 others next to him but they were witches so they melted.
